Bamboo Root Barrier Installation
A root barrier is only as good as its weakest joint. Bamboo rhizome will find and exploit a gap of a few millimetres, so specification, depth and welded overlaps matter more with bamboo than with almost any other planting.
HDPE Barrier Membrane
0.75mm or thicker high-density polyethylene barrier specified according to bamboo species and rhizome pressure.
Correct Installation Depth
Trenched to a minimum 750mm depth, deeper on vigorous running species, with the top edge angled outward above ground.
Overlapped & Welded Joints
Every joint overlapped and heat-welded rather than simply taped or clipped, closing the gaps rhizome exploits.
Heat-Weld Seaming
Seams sealed by heat-welding to create a continuous barrier rather than a series of separate panels.
Existing Stand Containment
Barriers installed around established bamboo to contain an existing stand without full removal.
Installation Certificate
A written record of depth, membrane spec and joint method provided for your records or a future buyer.
How the works run
- 1Boundary and species surveyWe identify the bamboo species, assess rhizome vigour and map the boundary line requiring protection.
- 2Trench excavationA trench is dug to the specified depth along the boundary or containment line.
- 3Membrane installationHDPE barrier is placed in the trench, positioned with the top lip angled outward above ground level.
- 4Overlap weldingAll joints are overlapped to the specified minimum and heat-welded to form a continuous seal.
- 5Backfill & certificationThe trench is backfilled and compacted, and an installation certificate is issued confirming the specification used.
Why depth and welding matter more than the membrane itself
Most root barrier failures we are called to investigate are not caused by an inadequate membrane thickness, they are caused by a barrier installed too shallow, or joints that were overlapped but not welded. Running bamboo rhizomes travel horizontally at shallow depth looking for the path of least resistance, and an unwelded overlap or a barrier that stops at 400mm depth gives that rhizome exactly the gap it needs to bypass the whole installation within a couple of growing seasons.
Containing an existing stand versus a new planting boundary
Installing a barrier around bamboo that is already established is a different job to installing one ahead of new planting, because live rhizome is often already present in the ground where the trench needs to go. We excavate and remove any rhizome found within the trench line itself before installing the membrane, so the barrier is not sealing rhizome inside the protected area on the wrong side of the boundary.
